I read on Mark Evanier's site this morning that we could have had a great Spirit movie over 25 years ago by the director of the Iron Giant, the Incredibles, and Ratatouille, instead of Frank Miller's (per)version:

The first review appears to be in. I didn't read it, but I read this introductory line to it:
The reviewer says it’s replaced “Battlefield Earth” as the worst movie he’s ever seen.
Oh, come on! It can't possibly be THAT bad!
I remember hearing about this "Spirit animated" floating around out there, back when I was really more into Hollywood than I am now (which is to say, I paid it some attention). I remember hearing about how wonderful the story was and how it would revolutionize American animation, but then it just sort of petered out... like most superhero-type films seemed to, back then.
Yes, it would probably be wonderful.
Yes, it's pretty obvious this is Frank's take on the characters, not Will's.
But I am going to see this anyway. It might be entertaining. It might be good. It might be Sin City II for all I know.
But it will be the Spirit.
